Number portability
Has anyone tried moving their fax phone number from an internet fax company to another internet fax company or to a regular land-line?
Was it difficult? How long did it take?
Hi- I work for a fax service provider and this issue comes up a lot with all IP Fax service providers.
It is difficult to release fax numbers from both regular PTT's and other fax service providers. The reason is, most IP fax numbers are negociated in blocks from a main carrier for the IP fax company to use, not one by one. Also, the carrier and the IP Fax competitor both know that you are trying to move your business elsewhere, so they will hold tightly to their numbers.
Here is what to do:
Find out if the original fax numbers you have were negociated that your company owns them personally or not. If your company does, then the original carrier will have to point those fax numbers towards your new IP fax service provider.
If you do not own the numbers, there are a few options
You can configure your own internal PBX to forward the fax calls from your existing fax number to the new one. There is additional cost incurred for that, though.
What most people do is simply take the new number, keep the old one for a few months, get their customers used to using the new number, and when everyone is migrated and the business cards are reprinted with the new number, then you can cancel the old one.
Hope this helps!
