Email to Fax behind PBX?
16 November 2005 - 11:03pm
Hi,
Can any of the email2fax services available today allow me to send faxes to fax machines that are reached after dialling ext. numbers or those that are able to receive faxes during PBX' welcome message, i.e. without giving fax tone.
TIA
fargo,
Fax machines that are reached by dialing an extension number - this should be achievable if the provider lets you insert a "pause" symbol in the number. Here's what I mean - say you want to fax to 212-555-1111 extension 444, you would enter 2125551111PPP444@faxprovider.com, where P is the pause indicator. So the number gets dialed, then there's a wait while the PBX answers, then the extension touch-tones are presented to the PBX. Ask the provider if they support this.
Receiving fax during welcome message - this should work off the shelf because it's inherent to how faxing works. When your service dials any number, it sounds a tone on the line every few seconds. This tone indicates "I am a fax machine". If the receiving end is a dual-purpose voice/fax device it will listen for this tone when answering. Once it hears the tone it will switch to fax mode and present the long fax beep indicating "let's synchronize".
